The Coronation of Mary
Scripture
"A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars."
Revelation 12:1
"Daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. Hear, O daughter, consider, and incline your ear; forget your people and your father's house, and the king will desire your beauty. Since he is your lord, bow to him; the people of Tyre will seek your favor with gifts, the richest of the people with all kinds of wealth."
Psalm 45:9-12
"All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold. In embroidered garments she is led to the king; her virgin companions follow her—those brought to be with her. Led in with joy and gladness, they enter the palace of the king."
Psalm 45:13-15
Meditation
In this final Glorious Mystery, we contemplate Mary being crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Following her Assumption, Mary is given the highest place in heaven after Christ Himself. This coronation is not merely an honor bestowed upon her, but the fulfillment of her complete union with God's will throughout her life. The humble handmaid who said "yes" to God at the Annunciation now receives the crown of glory that reflects her unique role in salvation history.
Mary's queenship is unlike earthly royalty. She reigns not through power and dominion, but through her maternal intercession and care for Christ's Church. As Queen Mother, she continues her role of bringing souls to her Son. Her crown symbolizes the fulfillment of Christ's promise that those who share in His suffering will also share in His glory.
This mystery offers hope to all Christians, as Mary represents the destiny of the entire Church. What has been perfectly accomplished in her—union with God in body and soul, and participation in Christ's royal dignity—is what we too are called to share in, each according to God's plan. Mary's coronation reminds us that heaven is our true home and that faithfulness to God leads to eternal glory.
Mary's Queenship
The Church recognizes several biblical and theological foundations for Mary's queenship:
- Queen Mother Tradition - In ancient Israel, the mother of the king held the honored position of queen mother (gebirah), with significant influence. As Mother of Christ the King, Mary holds this royal dignity.
- Participation in Christ's Kingship - Through her intimate union with Christ and her role in redemption, Mary shares in a unique way in Christ's royal authority.
- Perfect Discipleship - Mary's complete fidelity to God's will makes her the model of discipleship. Christ promised that His faithful followers would reign with Him (Revelation 3:21).
- Spiritual Motherhood - As spiritual Mother of all Christians (John 19:26-27), Mary exercises her queenship through intercession and guidance for the Church.
Pope Pius XII formalized the Church's teaching on Mary's queenship in his 1954 encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam (To the Queen of Heaven), establishing the feast of the Queenship of Mary on August 22.

Prayer
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Queen of Heaven and Earth, Mary most holy, your crowning in glory completes God's plan for your life and reveals the destiny that awaits all faithful Christians. Help me to walk in your footsteps of faith, humility, and obedience so that I too may one day share in heaven's glory. When I am discouraged or face difficulties, remind me of the crown that awaits those who persevere. Through your powerful intercession, guide me safely through life's journey until I reach the eternal kingdom where you reign with your Son. May your queenship over my heart inspire me to greater love for Jesus and more faithful service to His Church. Amen.
Art and Tradition
The Coronation of Mary has been a beloved subject in Christian art since the early Middle Ages. Typically, these depictions show Mary being crowned by Christ, or sometimes by the entire Trinity—the Father and Son placing the crown on her head while the Holy Spirit hovers above in the form of a dove. Mary is usually portrayed in royal robes, often blue (symbolizing heavenly grace) and gold (symbolizing her royal dignity).
The tradition of crowning Marian images and statues, especially in May (Mary's month), reflects the Church's recognition of Mary's queenship. Many Catholic churches and shrines around the world hold annual May crowning ceremonies, where a statue of Mary is crowned with flowers, usually by children.
The Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen) prayer, dating back to the 11th century, is one of the most widely recited prayers honoring Mary's queenship. It is traditionally sung at the conclusion of Compline (Night Prayer) and is the final prayer of the Rosary. The Litany of Loreto includes numerous titles acclaiming Mary as queen: Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of Prophets, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Confessors, Queen of Virgins, Queen of All Saints, Queen of Families, Queen of Peace.
